Some fashion lovers may hear the word Kaftan and picture a large formless robe, but they’re really quite chic. Originally, Kaftans were brought over from Africa and the Middle East by travellers who loved the rich colors, textures and prints. In the 50’s Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior created finely patterned and embroidered Kaftans for their elite clients. Halston and Oscar de la Renta sent Kaftans down the runways in the 60’s and 70’s, and Michael Kors is still designing these beautiful dresses. These days Mui Mui has jumped into the arena with some beautifully designed Kaftans, too.
Kaftans come in all price points from pricey investment pieces to inexpensive beach cover-ups. Savvy shoppers can find classic ones in vintage shops. Kaftans are versatile and can be worn as robes, dresses, evening wear, cover-ups, and shorter versions can be worn as tunics with slim pants. Our favorites are Mui Mui, but not everyone can afford those.
They make for the perfect Summer party outfit – add a pair of hoop or chandelier earrings, and a cocktail ring and the look is complete. Here is just a taste of the beautiful styles and prints available:
