You know what isn’t chic? Hair that looks like straw, and a strawberry red scalp begging for skin cancer. Believe it or not, hair can get damaged from the sun, too, much like skin. On top of water damage from those fun summer activities, summer can leave your hair looking drab and dry.
Luckily there is action you can take to prevent damage to your hair during your favorite season.
Hats
Luckily, big, floppy sun hats are in right now, and not only do they protect your hair, they also protect your face from the sun’s harmful rays.

Hair Sunscreen
One option is to just include your hair in your sunscreen pat down before going outside, but that leaves your tresses oily and smelling of Banana Boat. Many companies have actually created sunscreen products to protect hair specifically from the sun.
For instance, Redken (one of our favorite hair product brands) has a hair sunscreen which smells great, helps your color last, and protects your hair from the rays.
A quick Google search will bring up some alternatives, too.
Be Choosy With Hair Product
If you know you’re going to be in the sun for awhile during the day, avoid using product that day that hair oils in it (ie Moroccan oil). Just like with your skin, oil heats up much more quickly and can accelerate damage.
Stay in the Shade
If you forgot to do these things and are out in the sun, try to stay in the shade as much as possible. Prolonged exposure to sun is good for neither the skin nor the hair.
